Bassett Murder Case Remains Unsolved
FRIDAY 11 JANUARY 1946
The Gin Room is home to some of Auckland’s most tantalising and titillating secrets. It was once an afterhours watering hole, and the most popular imbibing spot in town. Even politicians used to ring the afterhours door bell, five rings – three short and two long. It was so popular that the owner, Errol Boyd, had to disconnect the door bell during the 60s. This turned out to be no obstacle for the thirsty patrons, as they’d then scurry up the fire escape to get in for a drink. It is located within the Queen’s Ferry Hotel, the oldest pub in Auckland, with the first beer poured there on the April, 19, 1865. If the walls could talk, they may tell you about the cages in the basement where the owner Thomas Markwick, used to lock up sailors to make sure they didn’t head to the brothels and catch diseases in the early 1900s. Or perhaps they would tell you about how a machine gun was assembled in the basement and smuggled out in wrapped newspaper in 1963, the murder weapon for the infamous Basset Road murders in Remuera. There were a lot of criminals who used to knock around while I was there – The police always said they weren’t worried, because at least they knew where they all were. — Errol Boyd, Owner – 1961-1970.
